When we talk about food justice, we often focus on access and affordability—but we cannot ignore the people behind the food we eat. Farmworkers are the backbone of our food system, yet they are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis.
Rising temperatures across Florida are turning already difficult work into a daily health risk. Farmworkers labor outdoors for hours in extreme heat, often without consistent access to shade, water, or basic protections. And while the climate continues to shift, farm labor laws and safeguards have not kept up.
This is climate injustice in plain sight.
Despite their critical role, farmworkers are often excluded from conversations about environmental policy and food system reform. That needs to change. True food justice must include safe working conditions, climate protections, and equitable support for the workers who sustain us.
The Connection to Food Systems
Our food system is deeply dependent on labor that remains invisible to the consumer. Grocery stores are stocked, restaurant menus filled, and communities nourished—thanks to people working in dangerous environments.
We cannot talk about sustainability in agriculture without including the safety and dignity of the people who make it possible.
A sustainable food system must protect its workers.
A just food system must prioritize climate resilience for everyone—not just those at the top.
At Beth-El Farmworker Ministry, we believe that protecting farmworkers is central to building a more just, sustainable future. Through our Hope Grows Under the Sun campaign, we are providing hydration, protective gear, heat safety education, and summer meals to help farmworker families navigate the rising heat with dignity and care.
