Cooler Weather, Hidden Challenges: Health Risks Farmworkers Face

Even in places like Florida, where the weather is often warm, cooler days still happen. And for farmworkers who spend long hours outdoors, these changes in temperature can bring real health challenges that are easy to overlook.

Farmwork does not pause when the weather shifts. Fields still need care, crops still need harvesting, and families still depend on this work. But cooler mornings and fluctuating temperatures can quietly affect farmworkers’ health in ways many people do not realize.

Dehydration Does Not Disappear in Cooler Weather

It is common to associate dehydration with extreme heat, but it can happen even when temperatures are lower.

On cooler days, people often drink less water because they do not feel as thirsty. At the same time, farmworkers continue doing physically demanding labor for long hours. This combination can lead to dehydration, fatigue, and headaches without warning.

Access to clean water and regular breaks remains essential, no matter the season.

Muscle Strain and Physical Stress

Cooler temperatures can cause muscles to feel tighter, especially early in the morning. Starting work before the sun rises increases the risk of muscle strain, joint pain, and stiffness.

Farmworkers perform repetitive movements throughout the day, often without the chance to fully rest or stretch. Over time, these physical demands can lead to chronic pain and injury, particularly when protective clothing is limited.

Respiratory Health Concerns

Changes in temperature, exposure to dust, and time spent outdoors can also affect respiratory health. Cooler air can irritate the lungs, especially for those with asthma or other breathing conditions.

When access to healthcare is limited, small symptoms can go untreated and grow into larger health issues. Preventative care is not always easy to access, but it is deeply needed.

Barriers to Warm Clothing and Healthcare

Not all farmworkers have access to appropriate clothing for cooler mornings and long days outside. Jackets, gloves, and layers are not always easy to afford or replace.

Healthcare access continues to be a challenge as well. Language barriers, cost, transportation, and fear often prevent farmworkers from seeking care when they need it most. Many choose to push through discomfort because missing work is not an option.

Caring for Farmworkers Year Round

Health needs do not disappear when the weather changes. Farmworker families deserve care, protection, and support every day of the year.

Beth-El Farmworker Ministry is committed to walking alongside farmworker families through all seasons. By providing access to nutritious food, wellness resources, education, and compassionate support, Beth-El helps families stay healthy and connected.

Because caring for those who feed our communities should never depend on the weather.
