While most of us look for ways to escape the summer sun, farmworkers face it head-on—every single day. In Florida’s fields, temperatures often soar past 100 degrees. For the men and women harvesting the food that fills our tables, that heat is more than uncomfortable. It’s dangerous.
At Beth-El Farmworker Ministry, we’ve seen the toll extreme heat takes on the people we serve. Heat exhaustion. Dehydration. Sunburns. Blisters. These aren’t rare occurrences—they’re everyday risks for workers without proper protection. That’s why this summer, we’re inviting our community to help us “Gear Up for Safety.”
Safety Gear Saves Lives
It may seem simple—UV-protective shirts, gloves, socks. But these basic items can make the difference between finishing a workday safely or ending up in the hospital.
- UV shirts help shield workers from harsh sun exposure that can lead to heatstroke or skin damage.
- Gloves protect hands from sharp tools, blisters, and toxic pesticides.
- Socks prevent infections, foot injuries, and discomfort after hours of walking in the fields.
These aren’t luxuries. They are essentials—and for many, they are out of reach.
What It’s Like Without Them
Imagine bending over rows of crops under direct sunlight, hour after hour, without a breathable shirt to protect your skin. Imagine gripping rough tools all day with no gloves, or walking miles in worn-out shoes with thin, torn socks.
This is the reality for countless farmworkers who show up day after day, driven by the need to provide for their families—even when they don’t have the gear to protect themselves.
